The Morning After Was Concerning

There is something to be said for how a person handles the morning after their own poor decisions.

Some recover quietly. Respectfully.

Others make it worse.

This morning, Magnolia Lane bore clear signs of what Gladys has officially labeled “unnecessary activity.” Evidence was visible from the porch without effort, which is never a good sign.

A chair. Not where it belongs.

A cup. Also not where it belongs.

And something unidentifiable near the walkway that neither of us felt required closer inspection.

Ethel noticed it first.

“Well,” she said, “that answers the question of whether he learns from experience.”

He does not.

The College Kid emerged mid-morning, moving slowly and with what can only be described as a lack of direction. There was no sense of urgency. No acknowledgment of the situation. No immediate attempt to restore order.

This was disappointing.

“Now listen,” Gladys said, “if you’re going to create a situation, you need to clean up the situation.”

He did not immediately clean up the situation.

Instead, he stood outside for several moments, looking around as if the items had placed themselves.

Suspicious behavior.

Eventually, minor progress was made. Items were moved. Some were removed. Others were simply relocated to less visible areas, which does not count as resolution.

“It’s not clean,” Ethel said. “It’s rearranged.”

Correct.

Of note: The Mail Carrier passed through during this time and maintained full professionalism despite the circumstances. No hesitation. No visible reaction. Impressive.

The Walker also passed later and, as expected, maintained proper form. A wave was executed. Standards upheld.

There is still hope for Magnolia Lane.

Porch Verdict:

“You can tell a lot about a person,” Gladys said, “by what they leave behind.”

Ethel nodded. “And what they don’t bother to fix.”
