The College Kid and the Late-Night Music Situation

There are certain expectations one has when maintaining a porch of this caliber.

Quiet. Order. Predictability.

None of which were present last night.

At approximately what Gladys has confirmed was “well past a reasonable hour for decent people,” the familiar disturbance began again. Music. Loud. Repetitive. Unnecessary.

Ethel did not look up from her tea at first.

“I’m going to assume,” she said calmly, “that this is temporary.”

It was not.

The sound carried down Magnolia Lane with alarming confidence. Not background music. Not a gentle evening melody. No. This was the kind of music that suggests decisions are being made.

Poor ones.

Gladys stood immediately.

“Now listen,” she said, adjusting slightly on the porch, “if you’re going to play music like that, you need supervision.”

There was no supervision.

From our vantage point, we observed increased activity at The College Kid’s residence. Lights on. Movement through windows. At least three separate instances of what appeared to be dancing, though the form was unclear and lacked structure.

“No rhythm,” Ethel noted. “And no respect for the hour.”

At one point, the volume increased.

This was a mistake.

Gladys has confirmed that the situation crossed from annoyance into official porch concern at that moment.

“The Walker will be through here in the morning,” she said. “And that woman deserves peace.”

Agreed.

No formal resolution was observed before the porch entered overnight watch mode, though the noise eventually subsided. Whether due to exhaustion, intervention, or poor planning remains unclear.

Porch Verdict

“People think just because it’s nighttime, no one is paying attention,” Gladys said.

Ethel took a sip of her tea. “We are always paying attention.”
