The Girl Has Started Taking Pictures and We Have Thoughts

There are moments on Magnolia Lane when a shift occurs.

Subtle at first. Easily missed by those not paying attention.

We are always paying attention.

It began three mornings ago when The Girl stepped onto the porch holding a small device and a level of focus we have not previously observed from her.

“She’s aiming it,” Gladys said immediately.

“At what?” Ethel asked.

At us.

This was unexpected.

The Girl adjusted her position, stepped back, leaned slightly to one side, and then took a picture. No explanation was provided. No consultation was requested. No warning was given.

“Now listen,” Gladys said, “if you’re going to document something, you need to state your intentions.”

The Girl did not state her intentions.

Instead, she took another picture.

And then another.

From that moment forward, a pattern has developed.

The Girl has begun moving throughout Magnolia Lane with this device, pausing at intervals to capture what she appears to believe are “moments.” We have observed her photographing the porch, the street, Mrs. Patterson’s decorations, and—most notably—areas that already required observation.

“She’s late,” Ethel said, watching her walk toward the curb. “But at least she’s arrived.”

Agreed.

On the second day, The Girl photographed a package that had been under active consideration for several minutes prior. No one asked her to do this. We had already formed initial opinions.

Still, the effort was noted.

“She’s trying,” Gladys admitted. “Misguided, but trying.”

On the third day, matters became more complicated.

The Girl crouched slightly near the edge of the yard and took a photo of what Gladys has since confirmed was a recycling bin that had not remained in its proper position.

This raised questions.

“She sees it,” Gladys said.

“She sees something,” Ethel replied. “Understanding remains unclear.”

There is now a growing concern that The Girl believes she is documenting beauty.

Flowers. Light. Quiet corners of Magnolia Lane.

This is not incorrect.

But it is incomplete.

Magnolia Lane is not just beauty.

It is behavior.

It is patterns.

It is decisions people think no one notices.

We notice.

The Girl has also, on multiple occasions, attempted to adjust our position prior to taking photographs.

This was not approved.

“We are not props,” Gladys said firmly.

“We are the perspective,” Ethel added.

The adjustment was minor, but the intent was clear. We have since resumed our proper observational stance and will continue to do so.

Of note: The Amazon Driver has now been photographed at least once. He did not appear aware of this. The Mail Carrier remained unaffected, as expected. The Walker executed a proper wave during one of these sessions, which has been recorded and appreciated.

There may be value in this development.

If The Girl continues, she may unintentionally create a record. A visual account of Magnolia Lane. Evidence, even, though we suspect she would not use that word.

“We’ll allow it,” Gladys said.

“For now,” Ethel agreed.

Porch Verdict

“At least she’s finally paying attention,” Gladys said.

Ethel nodded slightly.

“She’s not seeing everything yet,” she said, watching The Girl take another picture down the street.

A pause.

“But she’s closer than she was.”
